Wiltshire Landscape 2014, gouache on paper

I grew up in the Wiltshire countryside which I feel has shaped my interest in the visual experience of a landscape and being immersed in the outdoors. I love both open countryside and wilderness whether in the form of open plains, fields, mountains, lakes or rivers. It is always the unique pattern of shape, form and colour that attracts me to a landscape.

I am particularly interested in the process of translating a visual scene into a painted image. To do this, I select an image and reduce it to its essential elements for example, structure, interlocking shapes and colour. I also take a large number of high quality photographs of the scenes on which I work so that the essential authenticity of my landscapes is never lost.

Although I may simplify what is in front of me, it can still be referenced to a distinct place and time.
